After tackling the Vitality Compass the other day, I decided that week’s ‘healthy health links’ should be all about fitness…

Bloody nose? do not do this…

Dang! Another instance where conventional wisdom and years-old treatments have failed us yet again.
Bloody noses - a staple in the lives of kids, sports-playing teens and allergy-ridden adults - are not to be treated by tipping the head back as once was thought. Instead, you are to lower and tip your head forward, catching any wayward bleeding in a tissue.
Why is this? Because tipping the head back will send blood down into the esophagus and potentially into the stomach, which can be irritating and possibly cause vomiting. But by leaning the head forward, you can avoid such issues.

Vitality compass challenge, part two

So it’s my turn to report my results from the Vitality Compass Quiz, and let me tell you, I was not anxious to take that thing at first. I figured you’d have to be the next Arnold Schwarzenegger or Jessica Alba to score even decently on it, but after reading Liz’s results, I was encouraged. A real person who does not spend the bulk of her day in a gym and who probably noshes on a carb or two once in a while? If Liz could score well, so could I, right?

Testing the vitality compass.

I’m not one for questionaires and surveys but this Vitality Compass, an online longevity calculator, had me intrigued.
I wanted to know…was I in the Blue Zone? What was my life expectancy? And were my current life habits going to lead the way to a grand old age of 100 plus?
So I headed on over and took the Vitality Compass quiz.
Thirty five questions later, I got my answer.
I exist in the Blue Zone.
I’m 6.5 years younger biologically than my real age. Of course I’d rather it was 10 or 15 years younger but still any number less that the real one works for me.

Want an easy way to reduce stress naturally? Go nuts!
Assuming you’re not allergic to nuts, eating as little as one once of these little wonders can pump a ton of calming nutrients into your harried body. And after a l-o-n-g week, that’s probably exactly what you need right now, right? Thought so.
Nuts contain blood-pressure lowering B vitamins (which tend to get depleted when your muscles are tense), anxiety-kicking zinc, and vitamin E, a super antioxidant which helps protect cells from the damages caused by chronic nervousness.

20 minutes of physical exercise per week improves mental health

A Psychiatrist colleague of mine is known to frequently prescribe regular exercise as part of his teatment regimen for stress and depression. Looks like this recommendation is backed by even more evidence.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine shows there is a Dose response relationship between physical activity and mental health
The study involved 20,000 Scottish adults and investigators looked at their level of psychological distress and self-reported frequency of physical activity including sports, walking, and domestic activity.

Starfruit can kill

If you have kidney failure or are on dialysis, that is. The Star reports on a 66 year old Malaysian who fell ill after taking Starfruit while in China. (hat tip to Bushido@Dobbs for the link)
University Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) consultant nephrologist Prof Dr Tan Si-Yen said this was what happened to Tang Gon Seang, who has been suffering a kidney ailment.
The 66-year-old Malaysian was in Shenzhen visiting his son when he passed out on March 29 after eating star fruits and was rushed to the Shenzhen General Hospital where he fell into a coma.

How dandy: the anti-stress benefits of a dandelion

Spring is in the air for many of us, and usually that means allergies, yard work and the weeds that cause a lot of allergies and yard work.
But the next time you see a stray dandelion pop up in your yard, don’t be so quick to dig it up. Instead, admire it for it’s stress-busting abilities.

The sunday sidebar…green health.
