When blood tests are of no help

Spotted this letter to the NST on a patient’s experience.
A few comments are in order.
One general practitioner (GP) in Bukit Antarabangsa suspected dengue but sent me home with antibiotics and told me to return if I did not get better.
The “return if not better” part is reasonable but if one suspects dengue why on earth are antibiotics prescribed? This is symptomatic of the sorry state of affairs in Malaysia where antibiotics are abused for viral infections.
The hopping from doctor to doctor and hospital to hospital is also very typical of the situation in Malaysia. The best doctor is the last doctor seen at the tail end of the illness!
She did a tourniquet test on my arm and declared that I did not have dengue, and sent me home with more antibiotics.
